Prior to Devkit, we operated on a game by game basis to generate ~ $500k in revenue. Post Devkit, we made the conscious decision to offer games a free trial so that we could focus on growth in the short term.
This approach was working, and we saw a 10x in the number of games using Tribally within 30 days of Devkit going live. We conservatively targeted $100k/month in revenue for EoY, and this wasn’t factoring in the *MAJOR BRAND DEALS* that were in the pipeline - traditional gaming studios with 10s of millions of users.
We’ve figured out how to scale a proven product. Easy win, right?
On the verge of blowing up, we got nuked. Our lead investor defaulted on a $1,000,000 commitment, throwing us into a world of pain.
To cut a long story short, we no longer had runway to expand SaaS/Devkit via free trials and an instant switch to paid subscriptions would not cover our monthly burn unless we converted 100% of clients (we need more games at the top of the funnel).
F*ck.
Tribally are no stranger to adversity and our team shines in moments like this. It was perhaps inevitable that, faced with the very realistic prospect of failure, we realised Tribally is much, much bigger than a p2p platform that connects games and gamers:
